Wisdom_WorkplaceJobs and their essential functions are typically designed for workers in optimal health, but not all workers show up that way. Millions of Americans struggle with mental health and substance use (alcohol or drug) conditions, but often don't get the proper treatment or support they need.

Since these behavioral health conditions are becoming increasingly common, employers benefit when they are prepared and knowledgeable about them. Knowledgeable employers are able to identify and discuss solutions with employees that lead to better work performance. Prepared employers can help their employees to perform at their best, and maintain compliance with appropriate regulations.

Behavioral health conditions typically progress through five stages. This webinar will describe the predictable sequence of impacts and events that occur as symptoms emerge, and provide a map for supervisors whose employees are experiencing behavioral health conditions.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify the five stages most behavioral health conditions follow, including their impact on work performance, and the corresponding legal and regulatory issues.
  • Explore employee symptoms and employer responses for each stage of impact.
  • Gain an understanding of barriers that prevent employees from seeking assistance, and how to reduce them.
  • Discover strategies to improve communications and support for employees with behavioral health conditions.
  • Examine potential accommodation solutions for employees who experience limitations or restrictions related to behavioral health conditions.

Partners received an email with the webinar information that you can send to clients. The invitation is also available on AdEase.

Presenter:
Dan Jolivet, Ph.D.
Workplace Possibilities Consultant
Standard Insurance Company

Dr. Dan Jolivet started working in the behavioral health field in 1981 as he was completing a degree in mathematical statistics and wanted to get some hands-on experience in an applied scientific discipline. His first job was a work-study position at a Community Mental Health Center in Seattle, where he quickly became hooked on trying to understand how people change.

Dan has held a variety of roles throughout his career. He has worked in inpatient hospitals, residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, employee assistance programs and in private practice. He moved into supervision as a way to multiply his impact, and began working in managed care soon after that. He joined The Standard as its Behavioral Health Director in 2016, and says his favorite part of the job is still helping people – both claimants and people on his team – find solutions to seemingly intractable problems.

Dan received his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Washington, and his master's degree and doctorate in clinical psychology from Georgia State University.
