Federal agencies released final regulations in 2015 on the preventive services mandate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that requires non-grandfathered group health plans to provide coverage without cost-sharing for specific preventive services, which for women include contraceptive services.

In October 2017, interim final rules from the Internal Revenue Service, Employee Benefits Security Administration, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) were published, allowing a greater number of employers to opt out of providing contraception to employees at no cost through their employer-sponsored health plan.
